Premiering at the Grammy Awards in 1984, the category of Best Mexican-American Album began as way to honor quality albums released in the Mexican music genre. It underwent several name changes over the years, starting with Best Mexican-American Performance, followed by Best Mexican-American Album, Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance, Best Mexican-American Music Performance, and Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album, before it became Best Mexican-American Album. The category remained until 2009, when it was split into two new categories: Best Norteno Album and Best Regional Mexican Album.

Mexican Mariachi music has been a favorite in the Mexican community. The new forms are spreading outside the community. It is not yet mainstream, but it has definitely gained greater support thanks to the new forms that now exist.

Some of the new forms incorporate a sound that is a little bit more diverse. The Mariachi bands are picking up steam in lots of restaurants. Mexican Mariachi bands were always depicted as a sign of romantic gestures in movies. It is still this way in some restaurants, but the newer forms show a different sign of Mariachi music.
